Today has been one of those days. It started about 1 am, an hour after I got off of my work at home job, when the 6 year old woke up with stomach issues. Follow that with the 3 year who woke up an hour later insisting that her brother was beating her up and eating her pizza. After what seemed like an hour long attempt to calm her down (I’m sure it was more like 5 minutes), I finally crashed about 2am only to awaken to the alarm at 6:30am.
That was followed by a large tree limb that appears to have fallen on our cars (no major damage thank goodness), and more stomach issues from the 6 year old. Almost freezing rain. Then the battery light comes on in the van (which already needs to go to the shop for transmission issues). And the day just continued on and on like that….one thing after another, including a 3.5 year old who is now refusing naps.

And all the time, I’m thinking, I just NEED to get my blog post done today for this challenge!!! Oh, and I may have had a few longing wishes that I was lying on a warm beach somewhere in there as well!
So today’s post is supposed to be about a home business idea. However, I didn’t exactly have a chance to research that much because the day got away from me! So, instead, I will just give you some thoughts about finding the right home business for you!
There are really thousands of options when it comes to being an entrepreneur and finding the right home business. Maybe you are like me and need a very flexible business that will allow you to deal with constant interruptions from the kids (I think this would be a lot of moms)! Or maybe you have extra time when your kids are at school. Maybe you are someone who is working a part-time or full-time job and need something you can start up on your off hours. Take all of this into consideration before making your decision.
Also, think about how much you are willing to invest in yourself. You may be unable to invest much, but in order to start an actual home business, you will always have to invest something, if not money then time, usually both. There are home businesses you can start for very little, but you need to invest in learning the ropes of that business if it is not something that you are already doing.
Are you able to work at all outside the home or feel you need to in order to get away for a bit? Do you like being around people? These businesses might be for you:
- Catering
- Cleaning Business
- Errand and Companion Service
- Pet Sitting Service
- Professional Organizing
Are you the opposite (like me) and have your kids with you 24/7? Then something online would probably be better for you:
- Affiliate Marketing
- Writing and selling E-books
- E-bay Seller
- Blogger
- Copywriter
- Graphic/Web Designer
- Travel Agent
- Social Media Consultant
Maybe you are a social butterfly and could sell beach front property in Kansas? (I couldn’t sell a free monkey to the zoo, so this isn’t a very good area for me!) You might be great at direct sales companies. A few are:
- Stella and Dot
- Avon
- Tupperware
- Pampered Chef
- Beachbody
- Barefoot Books
- LaBella Baskets
There are countless others as well. Many of these opportunities require time out of the house as well for parties or other social events in order to be most successful.
There are really thousands of ideas out there! Think about your passions, what things make you excited. If you are going to be building a business with this, you are going to be surrounding yourself with it constantly so pick something that doesn’t make you yawn!! Write down a few ideas and start a Google search! I bet you will find all kinds of information in your chosen niche! Then the final step is to just do it!! You won’t get anywhere just thinking. Take action and start that home business!

OMG, what a tremendous day! Today in San Diego the weather was a perfect 68 degrees. Great breakdown of the differences. I really like how you integrated personality and lifestyle types. I myself am a natural introvert so I love being at home but I’ve also grown a successful offline business by doing a lot of networking and workshops for entrepreneurs. For me, being out in the world building my business takes a ton of energy and I find myself bogged down by other people’s problems. That’s why I’ve decided to take my blogging seriously so that I can create the lifestyle of my dreams on my own terms.
I sometimes wonder why I ever moved back to Illinois from Florida…what were we thinking!? Haha!
Yes, I’m an introvert too and though I enjoy interacting with other people, it’s so much better for me if I can do it on my own terms. I think it’s very possible for introverts to create successful offline businesses if that is where there interest lies but it has to be their passion. I went into nursing 12 years ago which requires A LOT of public interaction, I consider myself a great nurse…but it’s not my passion and I think that has a lot to do with my personality.
Great ideas and thank you for pointing out the difference between being able to leave the house or not.
I have a daughter with autism which means I have to be both flexible with time and able to stay home because there is a lack of available sitters.
Jenn Alex Brockman recently posted…New Jersey peer support for parents of kids with autism
Yes! Very important to think about this before jumping in! It would certainly be upsetting to invest time and money and then realize that you had to be out of the house too much or working in non-flexible hours.
These are some great ideas, Erika. I hope that little kiddo is feeling better!
Thanks Angie! He’s acting fine at least!
